Where hostels are

  • Downtown: close to the Texas State Capitol, the Congress Avenue Bridge and the Lady Bird Lake trail.
  • South Congress (SoCo): a street of shops and cafés just south of the river, reached by bus or a pleasant walk across the bridge.
  • East Austin: an area of galleries, murals and eateries with a local feel, a short ride from downtown.
  • West Campus and the University area: north of downtown, with student-priced stays and frequent buses.

Getting in from the airport

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is about 6 miles southeast of downtown. Rideshares and taxis take roughly 20 to 30 minutes, and Capital Metro city buses serve the airport at a lower fare.

Safety and budget tips

Downtown and South Congress are busy and comfortable in the daytime. At night, use rideshares between districts rather than walking, and keep valuables in the locker. Summer heat is intense, so check the dorm has working air conditioning and plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning. To save money, book early for spring and fall events, look for hostels with a kitchen, and use free sights such as the Capitol grounds and the lake trail.

Do the lake trail early. The Lady Bird Lake loop is free, flat and much cooler at sunrise than in the afternoon.
