San Francisco’s hostels are concentrated downtown, around Union Square and Market Street, with a few near Fisherman’s Wharf and in the Mission. Hotels are expensive here, so a well-located hostel is one of the best ways to save.

Where to stay

  • Union Square / downtown: BART and cable cars on the doorstep. Read recent reviews about the block itself.
  • Fisherman’s Wharf and North Beach: the waterfront, piers and Alcatraz ferries.
  • The Mission: murals, cheap food and a local feel, on BART.

Alcatraz sells out: tickets for the island often go weeks ahead in summer. Book as soon as your dates are fixed.
