Boston has only a handful of hostels, and with hotel rates among the highest in the US they fill up fast. The best base is downtown, between the Theatre District, Chinatown and Boston Common, where the Freedom Trail starts.

Where to stay

  • Theatre District and Chinatown: HI Boston is at 19 Stuart Street, a short walk from Boston Common.
  • Back Bay and Fenway: pricier, close to Newbury Street and Fenway Park.
  • Cambridge: across the river, near Harvard and MIT, a few stops on the Red Line.

Free from the airport: the Silver Line SL1 bus is free when boarded at Logan Airport and connects to the Red Line at South Station.
